Abu Simbel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 kilometers (140 miles) southwest of Aswan, Egypt. The site consists of two rock-cut temples, the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari. The temples were built by Ramses II in the 13th century BC, and they were relocated to a higher location on the west bank of the Nile River in the 1960s to save them from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

Abu Simbel is home to two magnificent rock-cut temples, the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari. The Great Temple was built by Ramses II in the 13th century BC and is dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Re, Ptah, and Ramses II himself. The temple is famous for its four colossal statues of Ramses II, which are each 67 feet (20.4 meters) tall.
The Small Temple was built by Ramses II for his wife, Nefertari, and is dedicated to the goddess Hathor. The temple is decorated with beautiful reliefs of Nefertari and Hathor.
In the 1960s, the temples of Abu Simbel were relocated to a higher location on the west bank of the Nile River to save them from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser. This was a massive undertaking that involves cutting the temples into blocks and then moving them to their new location.
